Embarrassing Questions During Pregnancy?
There are lot of questions in your mind which may seem absurd to you and therefore you shy away from asking your doctors or friends. Nevertheless they are important for a better understanding of healthy pregnancy. To eliminate some of the anxiety, we bring to you some questions from real moms-to-be with answers from the experts.
I am having nausea and vomiting specially in the morning and I am pregnant what can I do?
To avoid vomiting and nausea, move your limbs for few minutes before getting out of bed or take a dry toast or biscuit before rising from the bed and avoid fatty foods and liquid on an empty stomach. If these do not relieve the symptoms, take anti-vomiting drugs like doxinate(preferably consult your doctor for a prescription) before sleeping. If excessive vomiting occurs, consult your doctor.
Why backache occurs in pregnancy and what can be done to get relief?
Mild continuous backache is not alarming it is due to relaxation of the ligaments of joints(to facilitate the passage of the child during labor) and faulty posture in pregnancy. Improvement of posture by keeping the back as straight as possible, taking rest in hard bed, massaging the back muscles help in backache.
I am pregnant and severely constipated. I sometime pass blood in stools, what can I do?
Constipation is a common problem of pregnancy due to hormonal effect. Take plenty of fluids, vegetables and high fibre diet. A glass of lukewarm water early in the morning may be helpful. Mild laxative like Isabgol (psyllium husk) 1-2 teaspoons in milk or 1-2 teaspoons cremaffin pink at bed time can be taken. Bleeding in stools may be due to hard stools or piles. Regular use of laxative to keep the stool soft may be helpful.
Is it normal to have urine leakage during pregnancy?
Yes, in pregnancy, there is an increase of blood supply in your body and simultaneously the baby weight presses down on your bladder, which causes the need to urinate more frequently. Sometimes things like sneezing or coughing which put a little extra stress on your bladder can also result in urine leakage. This issue is usually resolved once you have your baby. It is important to do Kegel exercises to strengthen your pelvic muscles and help you gain more control over the bladder. Also one should avoid having constipation as it puts pressure on the bladder. However if you are not sure that what you are leaking is urine or not, it is best to consult your doctor.
I have a strong smelling vaginal odor. Is this normal?
During pregnancy, a woman’s estrogen levels increase and this can cause her to secrete more cervical fluid. She may notice a whitish, milky looking discharge when she is pregnant. This is called leucorrhea. This discharge may cause you to have a stronger smelling vaginal odor but it is normal and nothing to worry about. However if you notice a yellowish or reddish discharge, or a strong foul smell, please consult your doctor immediately.
I'm so hairy it's scary- Does this Happen?
Yes, It could and the good old pregnancy hormones are to blame again. The surge of progesterone in your body can cause hair to thicken or sprout on your face, breasts, stomach and even your back. This is a common pregnancy condition and, when your hormone levels stabilise following the birth of your child, it will most probably resolve itself. The upside is that the hair on your head will probably benefit from this surge of hormones too and you may find it glossier and thicker than ever before.
