Being parents is a tough task as parenthood is a blissful journey that demands constant attention and commitment. Talking about the newborn babies; they require lot of care and concern. If we only talk about baby skin care, it alone demands a lot of attention and care. Even a small rash can be extremely annoying for an infant and if not treated on time, it might take bigger shape in future. Below are certain useful tips on how you can take care of your newly born baby:
1. Use of baby products:
Soap: Usually baby gets cleaned up by only plain water but sometimes soap is also required. The baby soap should be very gentle. Use a mild soap containing olive, coconut, or palm oil and possibly herbal extracts such as calendula but only after discussing with pediatrician because the babies’ skin can be sensitive to these herbs. Avoid antibacterial soaps for infants.
Bubble Baths: Many bubble bath products for young children are based on detergents that destroy beneficial bacteria and harm the baby's acid mantle. Furthermore, bubble baths are a leading cause of urinary tract infections in infants. Usually bubble baths should not be preferred and if used then the baby bathing should not be excessive.
Shampoos: You should not shampoo your baby’s hair often. The shampooing schedules depend on the hair type of your baby –whether dry or oily and also the amount of hair present. The oily and thick hair requires more shampooing compared to the dry and thin hair.
While choosing the shampoos for your kids always prefer gentle ones with preservatives such as citrus seed extract, phenoxyethanol, and vitamins A, C, and E (also known respectively as retinyl palmitate, ascorbic acid, and alpha tocopherol). Always use Pthalates and Parabenes free shampoos.
Lotions & Oil: Massaging lotions and oils into your baby's skin can relieve irritation. But anything you use should be free of petrochemicals (especially mineral oil), which are themselves irritants. Also, look for healing herbs in your baby's lotion or oil. For baby skin, chamomile, olive oil, almond oil and aloe oils are best suited.
Powder: Baby powder may smell and feel good but powder can cause breathing problems and serious lung damage when inhaled, and it's not always easy to keep the powder out of the air where your baby might breathe it.
There's no evidence that baby powder helps to prevent or treat diaper rash, either. The best preventive strategy is to clean and pat dry your baby's bottom at each diaper change and then apply a thin layer of protective ointment or cream.
It is always advisable not to use talcum on baby’s body but if you wish to then pour some talc on your palms and rub slowly on your baby’s body so that the talcum particles do not spread widly in the air where the baby will breathe.
2. Baby Bath: For a newborn, a daily bath is not required. Too much soap and water can cause skin irritations and allergies, so it is advisable to only sponge bath your baby with lukewarm water twice or thrice a day. Always dry up the skin with a soft cloth to clean up any residue. In case of dryness, a baby moisturizer (preferably herbal) can be applied to maintain the natural moisture balance of the skin.
3. Baby Bedding : The baby bedding sheets and covers should be changed on regular intervals in order to avoid any infection on the baby’s body .
4. Baby Clothing: The baby clothes must be changed twice or thrice a day after giving sponge bath to the baby with luke warm water. Also keep in mind that the baby clot
5. Early Peeling of Baby Skin: It’s a very important thing to note that newborn babies normally shed a protective layer of skin during their first few days. . It is therefore advisable not to rub or peel this layer of skin.
These are few things which should be kept in mind by a mother. Everyday skin care of your baby will keep your baby skin clean and beautiful. You are the best judge for finding out the best products for your baby. So find out for yourself what is best suited for your baby’s skincare.
