Firstly, we should be clear of what exactly are junk foods?
These are typically ready-to-eat convenience foods containing high levels of saturated fats, salt or sugar, and little or no fruit, vegetables or dietary fiber and are considered to have little or no health benefits. Eg: fried foods like aloo tikki, burgers, pizzas, carbonated beverages and even alcoholic beverages.
Junk food during pregnancy: To nourish a growing fetus additional nutrients like protein, etc are required to meet the increased metabolic needs of the mother. But junk food fall short of these requirements.
According to the researches; mother who eat a junk food diet in pregnancy may seriously damage the long term health of their child.
Some harmful effects caused by consumption of junk food whilst pregnant:
Obesity: It is the most obvious effect of junk food consumption during pregnancy. Also obese women have a significantly higher risk of serious complications like high blood pressure, PIH, Gestational Diabetes, Pre-term labor and increase in birth defects. With junk food consumption as the baby has a higher likelihood of suffering from obesity so such babies are also at an increased risk of developing heart problems, cancer, arthritis and mental health disorders as they grow older.
Abnormal Energy Levels: Eating junk food have adverse effect on the energy levels of the body. The Junk Food causes energy level to spike, but then energy levels collapse equally fast sending one back for another quick snack. Further, junk foods can cause moodiness especially during pregnancy and make it difficult to get enough sleep at night so energy levels are never restores to normal.
Nausea & Drowsiness: By consuming junk meal rich in oil makes one feel drowsy and consuming junk food is more likely to cause nausea during pregnancy.
Heart Diseases: Junk Food even increases the cholesterol level in the body which in turn is more likely to cause heart related diseases both in mother and the baby. Junk food and processed food in general, is typically much higher in salt (sodium chloride) than freshly prepared food, leading to an increased risk of high blood pressure and other health problems.
Effects on Fetal Development: Fetal development is a very crucial time. We know that unhealthy foods are damaging to the health of the adult humans so they are likely damaging the developing fetus also. A diet lacking in nutrients such as proteins, etc (like a junk food diet) for a pregnant woman interferes with proper kidney development in the fetus.
Behavioral Disorders: The mother’s diet whilst pregnant & Breast feeding is very important for the long term health of her baby. Excessive consumption of junk food during pregnancy and lactation is associated with an increased risk of depression, poor learning and Attention Deficit Disorder(developmental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattention, over activity, and impulsivity) in the baby.
Dealing with the ultimate responsibility of being a parent is one of the hardest tasks for anyone to take, especially for the woman since she carries the baby inside her womb for about nine months. There are a lot of things like excessive consumption of junk foods actually can pose serious, real threats to your unborn baby. Junk foods will only provide you empty calories without giving the nutritional benefits of healthier foods that you should have been acquiring. So although it may seem impossible to resist eating those caramel candy bars and chips, try to control your cravings.
